Digitalisation of the Egyptology slide collection
Project aims
The most important aim of this project is to expand the quantitative and qualitative availability of images for students. Momentarily, visual material plays an important role in education; it is being used in eight (8) lecture series in the Bachelor phase. Additionally, the digitalisation of the Egyptology slides creates opportunities for new ways of education that are based on interactive use of visual data, especially in the Master. This will advance the individual scholarly activities by students. In particular, the material will supply students with unpublished material from excavation of archaeological sites, that in this way becomes available for Research Seminars and MA-thesis research. Lastly, the creation of preconditions to stimulate international cooperation and to support further use of digital material is also an important objective.
Project Output
The project will produce digital visual material opened up by Digibeeld and provided with metadata (in total ca. 500 images) for the benefit of eight (8) lectures in the Bachelor phase. Secondly, the project will expose the digital material opened up by Digibeeld (through the multilingual interface that will be developed in the course of 2006 within the framework of the Digimasia project) and provided with English metadata (in total ca. 500 images) for the purpose of minimally two seminars in the Master phase.
Project Partner
Initially, cooperation has been sought with Prof H.O Willems of KU Leuven, who is in charge of Egyptological education. Also in Leuven, there is a great request for more digital visual material, especially original photo’s, like those that can be found in the slide collection of Leiden University. In addition, Leuven has constructed a slide collection of a few hundred slides by the former professor J. Quaegebeur. At this moment, these slides can not be used, because slides are no longer used as teaching material. During a visit to Leuven in the course of 2006, there will be examined how many of these slides can be incorporated in file of Digibeeld.
