A multi-media Ewe course
Project aim
The aim of the project is to produce an audio-visual version of a course for the teaching and learning of Ewe. It can be used by students of Leiden University and the partner institution and in other contexts where Ewe is acquired as a foreign language.
Project output
The output will be a set of audio and video recordings of forty (40) lessons done in the Ewe-speaking area in Ghana. These recordings will be stored in an internet-based archive and disseminated via DVD media. In addition, an electronic version of the course book will be converted to Unicode format, to ensure easy transfer across platforms.
Project partner
The project, housed in the Department of African Languages and Cultures of Leiden University, will be carried out in cooperation with the Department of African Studies of Cologne University, Germany. Both institutions have a long tradition of Ewe teaching and learning, and Ewe is on offer in their new style BA-MA programmes in African languages, linguistics and cultures. We will also collaborate with Dr James Essegbey of the Department of African and Asian Languages and Literatures, University of Florida, Gainesville. Dr Essegbey is a co-author (with the Leiden University project coordinator F. K. Ameka) of the course book on which the recordings will be based.
The chances are that the material will be used at these foreign universities in the near future, and that more universities will follow in their wake.
